Dyer's Star Theory - 500 word minimum essay

Dyer's Star Theory - 500 word minimum essay
The pop stars image as a performer is really important. The key is to sell yourself as much as you can from all sorts of genres, such as metal, rock/punk, pop etc…The idea is you want to catch the audience attention. Just like Lady GAGA did with her meat dress, or her eccentric way of doing her hair, make up and selling herself through her music videos. Music stars like attention they want the world to know who they are, and what they do. There is a difference between star performers and pop stars. In my opinion I see that pop stars tend to sell more records and actually are better known around the world. Whereas pop performers are well known in one area of the music genre, people around the world can easily recognise them. For example Katy B a Brit school graduate well known for her pop, dubstep genre of music, but only recognise in the UK, she hasn’t told herself as much as Lady GAGA with her worldwide tours and outlandish fashion creations.

Industry & Audience

Stars are made from the industry or a record to serve purpose, the idea is to make as much money as they can from the audience. They want to tell sell themselves by doing crazy things that catches the audience’s attention. Rumours and tabloid news are regularly told about celebrities, the idea is so that the more news they sell about them the more money they make, whether it’s good or bad.

Record companies form their ‘stars’ giving them a persona, as we see on our TV’s, the idea behind it is as these characters are formed it’s almost like an alter-ego they put on before a show. When in real life they are any ordinary person with or without a dull personality. For example ‘One Direction’, they got famous in 2010, through the X factor, a music show where people audition they’re singing talent. These boys were purposely made to form in a group, by their looks. Their record company formed them to be regularly modern outgoing guys with a fun and happy type of personality, where they dress quite indie and have a way to catch young teenagers attention. Their way of ‘Hype’ to the audience is by engaging eye contact in their music video to young girls this is called ‘the notion of looking’ as if the celebrities performing are actually looking at you, or singing to you.

Record companies always want something new or different, an interesting or background story to these celebrities, in the music industry being ‘real’ can be considered boring, and being ‘ugly’ is unpolished. Many examples like Susan Boyle, a fantastic classical music singer, but because of her age, and she looks she is frowned upon shallow minded people in the music industry. Realistically whatever the nature of the celebrities are the main product of their record company. People have different genres of music and what they desire to listen to, but the main idea of getting people to like their product is by being different and selling yourself and your song lyrics. Such as Nicki Minaj famous for her crazy antics in the RnB genre of music but she sold herself out there being different and having interesting and funny lyrics. Record companies are a constant look out for fresh and new talent, like a recent genre of music was placed in the music industry, bringing back drum & bass into being in the charts, and dub step because quite popular nowadays, but yet still ‘in the dark’ in the music industry, because it’s not real talent.

People and audiences would usually pick more music released in the charts because they’re more popular, people wouldn’t listen to music on radio play or bands, because they find it boring and constantly want to be up to date with what everyone else is listening to.
